He had gained a lot of weight in medical school.  A medical Journal had an article about a diet.  He perfected it and released it to the public.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.healthcarechain.net/atkins-grapefruit-diet" target='_blank'>Atkins Grapefruit Diet</a><br />Dr. Atkins came up with new ideas, his Atkins diet, about the nature of weight gain.  He held that saturated fats weren&#8217;t as bad as people claim.   Carbohydrates, found in potatoes, and breads, were the real problem.  In Atkins theory eating too little fat make things even worse.  He pointed to all the low-fat foods that were high in carbohydrates.  Dieters were being tricked into eating foods that would cause them to gain more weight.  </p>
<p>This all changes in the Atkins diet.  Once Carbohydrates were removed from a diet, people would burn more stored body fat.  Once the fat was burned, the pounds will follow.  The goal wasn&#8217;t necessarily to take in fewer calories.  Now it was all about what your diet can help you burn.  In fact Atkins cited a study that claimed the body would burn an extra 950 calories on his diet.  But the claims were not true.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.healthcarechain.net" target='_blank'>Healthcare</a><br />In addition to claims of weight loss, Dr. Atkins said his Atkins diet could help people with type 2 diabetes. But that&#8217;s counter to the prevailing medical theories regarding type 2 diabetes which, although recommending that lowered intake of carbohydrates and weight loss help manage diabetes, ascribe no causal relationship between carbohydrates and type 2 diabetes.</p>

Americans spend over 40 billion dollars a year on pills, programs and weight loss products that simply don&#8217;t work.  That doesn&#8217;t stop people from coming up with all sorts of crazy diets and weight loss products.  Remember Beyonce&#8217;s starvation &ldquo;master cleanse&rdquo; diet?  It consisted of taking in nothing but lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper and water.  Seriously!  It also claimed to cleans the system from years of built up toxins.  Who knew, maple syrup destroys toxins.  Next time a poisonous snake bites someone have them eat some pancakes.  Then there are the magic pills, creams, and diet supplements that guarantee to burn pounds without exercise, guaranteed.  No that wasn&#8217;t a typo, they mention the word guarantee so often it starts to lose meaning.  And when they don&#8217;t mention exactly what is involved in the &ldquo;guarantee&rdquo; it doesn&#8217;t have any meaning.  It&#8217;s simply a way of making people think the Atkins diet product works.</p>
<p>Another diet is the VLCD or Very Low Calorie Diet.  They work, and studies prove it.  The problem is they are often sold to people for home use to drop a few pounds.  That&#8217;s a problem because of their nature.  VLCD&#8217;s are extreme diets designed for seriously overweight people.  These diets often have people eat half or less of their daily caloric intake.  They&#8217;re designed to be implemented in medically supervised closed settings, where people can&#8217;t cheat.  When used outside of a closed setting, often a clinic called a &ldquo;fat farm,&rdquo; these diets can be dangerous to the dieters health and will generally not work because of binge eating after a period of partial starvation.</p>
<p>Atkins diet plan, do work, but can create a number of problems with the body if not supervised and given advice by a doctor.  Painful Gallstones develop in up to 25% of people who lose large amounts of weight over a few months.  Careless dieters can often become dehydrated because they don&#8217;t realize a large portion of the water people need to drink comes from foods.  It&#8217;s easy to compensate for this by drinking more water.  Malnutrition can develop from not eating enough protein over a long period of time. <p>No matter the season of year, some sports playoffs are beginning somewhere.  The &#8220;winners&#8221; get to stay and play. &#8220;Losers&#8221; get to go home and re-live their mistakes.</p>
<p>When Winter approaches here in South Carolina, the competition for the few remaining seeds and berries in our back yard gets serious.  The &#8220;winners&#8221; spend their days, and nights, with full bellies.  The &#8220;losers&#8221; make do with whatever scraps hit the ground. (Always a less than satisfying diet)</p>
<p>Losing is NOTalways a good thing. Our psyches very actively resist loss&#8230;in any form.</p>
<p>DIETING &#8220;losers&#8221;, faced with a smorgasbord buffet, will see all the things that they must avoid; then pull out their calorie counting books and calculators to determine what, if anything, is &#8220;allowed&#8221; by their usually less than two week old &#8220;new, MIRACLE DIET&#8217;s&#8221; restrictions.  They walk away feeling miserably deprived and hungry.</p>
<p>several weeks of feeling deprived is about all the mind and body will allow.  Enter: The binge stage.  Miracle DIET is out the window. Within a few days, any weight &#8220;lost&#8221; will be regained&#8211;probably with a couple extra &#8220;insurance pounds&#8221;. That&#8217;s why they are called &#8220;YO-YO DIETS&#8221;.</p>
<p>Winning dieters approach the same bountiful table and, if they are at all hungry, know that the diet they have been on since birth &#8220;allows&#8221;&#8211;actually encourages,  &#8220;a little of this&#8230;and a little of that&#8221;. Hunger satisfied, they move on to some other pleasantness, feeling fully satisfied.</p>
<p>The intermittent CAPITALIZATION in this writing is intentional.</p>
<p>DIET refers to some artificially imposed &#8220;system for weight loss&#8221;. The various DIETS are for &#8220;losers&#8221;.</p>
<p>A diet, used in it&#8217;s original meaning, is simply &#8220;the sum total of what we eat&#8221;. By making a few, pleasant adjustments to a diet and lifestyle, it&#8217;s actually almost automatic to achieve (TO WIN) whatever weight goal is set&#8211;even if that goal is to gain weight.</p>
<p>Gaining weight is simply not a problem for most of the world&#8217;s population&#8211;over half of whom are currently overweight.  So you see, we are not alone. Most of the people in the world could benefit from making those few, pleasant adjustments to their current diet and lifestyle.</p>
<p>Why and how do I keep emphasizing &#8220;few&#8221; and &#8220;pleasant&#8221; &#8220;adjustments&#8221;?</p>
<p>Easy. Gayle and I have been making those adjustments for nearly a month now; and they keep getting fewer. You see, we are among the half of the world&#8217;s population who will never be striving to GAIN weight.</p>
